Traditional Skills Training Centre, Dumfries House Estate

Description

The Sawmill at Dumfries House appears to be part of early 19th century additions which were designed to improve and modernise the estate. It would have been part of a self-sufficient enterprise, with other working buildings such as the stables, coach house, laundry and home farm. Located to the west of the house, beside Polcalk Burn, it would not have been intended to be visible.

The sawmill structure and equipment form part of the Dumfries House Estate's listed landscape and were in a highly dilapidated state. They have now been restored to working order, by skilled Hope Homes' craftsmen, and two more smaller buildings added.

In their new role as a Traditional Skills Training Centre, the completed buildings will host many courses including The Prince's Trust's Get Into Traditional Building and The Prince's Foundation for the Building Community's Residential Summer School.

The Centre was recently visited by HM The Queen in July 2014.
